Do I need a gas safety certificate?

If you own a property, it is recommended that you receive a gas safety certificate every 12 months to ensure the safety and efficient operation of your gas supply and heating appliances. It is not a legal requirement as a homeowner to receive this certificate, however. But, you should still get all your gas appliances checked by a certified gas engineer to ensure the reliability of your gas supply, especially when moving into a new property that you don’t know the history of.

What does the gas safety check consist of?

The certificate will describe each of the appliances that were tested and their location as well as the results of each of the safety checks on each appliance. There will also be an outline of any safety issues that were flagged during the inspection and any recommended remedial action to ensure the safety of the property. You will also receive the details of your property and the engineer who performed your inspection as well as a confirmation that the inspection was in accordance with the gas safety regulations 1998.

During the inspection the following items are checked, gas tightness in appliances, gas pressure, flue flow to ensure safe removal of combustion products, safe operation of flame failure products, chimney flow, system installation safety, overall condition and checking of any unsafe features.

Any issues are rated and coded as follows,

C1: Danger present. There is risk with the installation, repairs must be performed immediately.

C2: Potentially dangerous: There is no immediate danger, but the issues should be attended to urgently.

C3: Improvement is recommended. There is no danger, but this could develop if left unresolved.

How do I arrange a gas safety check?
